Interview with Leonard Mlodinow, author of the book Subliminal
Mike Carruthers:
Your unconscious mind is very busy.
Leonard Mlodinow:
About 95% of the energy that your brain uses goes toward unconscious processes. And the conscious processes only take up about 5% of your brain. So the unconscious is really what runs your body.
Leonard Mlodinow, author of the book Subliminal…
Everything from your heart beating to the way you get startled when there’s a loud noise to an impulse you have to buy a certain candy bar. Or when you’re buying a French wine versus a German wine – all these are influenced by unconscious processes that happen.
In fact an interesting study to illustrate this took place in England.
Where there was a grocery store that allowed researchers to play soft music in the background of their wine aisle. And they played on alternate days German and French music. And when they played the German music two thirds of the wine that was bought was German. And when they played the French music two thirds of wine bought was French. And everyone either didn’t remember hearing any music or denied that the music didn’t have any effect on their decision – but obviously it did. This is your unconscious mind at work.
What’s interesting about these unconscious influences, says Leonard…
Ceases to be effective when you’re aware of it – so one way to overcome these things is to just be aware of them. You still have those feelings that they create even if you’re aware of it but then you know that it’s happening and you can overcome it.
