Mike
Carruthers: Does anxiety ever get in your way?
Margaret Wehrenberg:
Anxiety is a feeling of, well... being afraid or fear that something bad is about
to happen and that is beyond what's normal. Dr.
Margaret Wehrenberg, author of the book The
10 Best Ever Anxiety Management Techniques… Can
you go to a party and just relax and not monitor every word out of your mouth?
Or worry about if you did something wrong, or dressed wrong, or that people are
liking you or not liking you? If you're going through life with your brain totally
preoccupied that way you probably don't have a quality of life that pleases you.
And you can change that. And
it starts by being aware of those anxious thoughts going on in your head... What
you say to yourself on an ongoing basis and watching what's called "self-talk."
Getting rid of negative self-talk is a very important component of anxiety management.
And to do that, you first have to spot yourself doing it. Sometimes that's not
so easy. When you
worry unnecessarily and get caught up in those anxious thoughts... It
feels true and it's almost like you have to monitor what's the voice of anxiety
and what's the voice of reality. I talk sometimes about anxiety having its own
voice in your brain, tempting you, "You should worry now, you should worry
about it." And we have to learn how to recognize what's the voice of anxiety
and what's the voice of rationality. At
